Many people at any age can develop diabetes; it is more common than you think. Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes are dramatic and occur rapidly (usually to children or teenagers). Excessive thirst and bathroom trips: You might feel the need to drink more than usual, resulting in more urination than normal. This can lead to dehydration.
Rapid Weight loss: When the body isn’t getting enough glucose, it starts to take stored fat and uses it for energy. This results in drastic weight loss. This is more common in Type 1 compared to Type 2.
Exhaustion: When glucose isn’t present, your body is forced to feed off of itself as a source of energy. The result is you constantly feeling weak, tired or sleeping for long periods of time.
Other symptoms that can occur are:
• Blurry vision
• Poor healing of cuts and bruises
• Unexplained irritability
• Excessive eating
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Numbness in your hands, legs or feet
• Frequent infections
